Now in its 20th year,\u00a0Art Basel Miami\u00a0<\/a>has become a landmark event where the main show is less important than what happens behind the scenes.\u00a0<\/p>\n While the \u201ccreme de la creme\u201d of the art world mingle at the main exhibit and SoBe\u2019s fancy hotels, the hip crowd head elsewhere in the city. Seasoned collectors rarely visit Miami\u2019s vibrant\u00a0Wynwood\u00a0<\/a>neighborhood, best known for its street art. They are making a huge mistake.<\/p>\n Wynwood and the area around is now home to\u00a0Tech Basel\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 a chaotic and insanely popular week of happenings that runs concurrently with Art Basel. And it\u2019s just so much more fun than the collector\u2019s lounge!\u00a0<\/p>\n Tech Basel in Miami brings together techies, digital artists and a cast of weird characters you could never have imagined in your wildest dreams. Large-scale conferences, such as the\u00a0Web3 Summit<\/a>, coincided with massive parties organized by biggest crypto companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n In addition to over 250 of the world\u2019s leading galleries exhibiting at South Beach Convention Center, Tech Basel is bringing more provocative \u2014 and lesser-known \u2014 artists to Wynwood.\u00a0<\/p>\n Even if they aren\u2019t setting trends, they definitely have their fingers on the pulse of the world. And in the post-pandemic year of 2022, patriarchy and state repression are unquestionably on the agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n Judy Chicago<\/a>, a pioneering feminist artist, presented her new project at ICA Miami this year. The initiative, called \u201cWhat If Women Ruled the World<\/a>,\u201d is aiming to become the largest gender rights community on Web3.\u00a0<\/p>\n Chicago collaborated with\u00a0Nadya Tolokonnikova<\/a>, the leader of Russian punk group Pussy Riot, who spent four years in prison for participating in a public performance directed against Vladimir Putin. Earlier this year, the artist joined forces with\u00a0Trippy Labs<\/a>\u00a0to create UkraineDAO. The initiative raised\u00a0around $7 million<\/a>\u00a0via an NFT of Ukraine\u2019s flag to support various charities from the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n In the promo video, Tolokonnikova responds to 11 thought-provoking questions. \u201cIf women ruled the world, would there be violence?\u201d asks Chicago. \u201cMen could find new ways to express their disappointment, vulnerability, and fears without the need to take it out on others,\u201d says Tolokonnikova. \u201cThe rape, violence, and war brought by tyrants\u2019 repressions would no longer be necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n The project invites everyone who shares feminist values to submit messages in response to Chicago\u2019s thought-provoking questions. The responses will become the foundation for a new Web3 community challenging patriarchy and the existing world order.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThere has to be another path for us as people,\u201d Chicago said at the presentation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n An Iranian artist known under the pseudonym\u00a0Hypnotiq<\/a>\u00a0showcased his new project in Wynwood in collaboration with\u00a0Creators Console<\/a>, a no-code NFT management platform. The project, called\u00a0Women Unite<\/a>, will launch early next year.<\/p>\n Hypnotiq\u2019s seven unique physical NFTs feature neon-daubed sculptures dedicated to women\u2019s rights and freedom. Inspired by\u00a0Mahsa Amini<\/a>, the 22-year-old Iranian who died in police custody after allegedly violating the country\u2019s strict dress code for women, his sculptures are a passionate provocation. And it almost cost the artist his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI was waiting for a cab in New York late at night when a few Muslim guys with knives approached me,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2018You are Hypnotiq, and you are an insult to Islam. We\u2019re going to kill you,\u2019 they said.\u201d Instead, they parted as friends: Hypnotiq told them the story of his childhood, which has inspired his art.\u00a0<\/p>\n The artist\u2019s mother and his aunt were tortured by the Iranian morality police in Tehran when Hypnotiq was just five years old. \u201cWe were going to the park, I was holding my mom\u2019s hand,\u201d he said. \u201cThe next thing I remember the morality police knocked us to the ground. They put a gun to my head. I was so scared that I peed myself. They said \u201cYour mom is a whore.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The morality police took the artist\u2019s mother and her sister, who was 15 years old at the time, into a van. \u201cWhen she got out, her lips were bleeding. They cut them with razor blades.\u201d One of Hypnotiq\u2019s sculptures, with grotesque 3D lips, is a reference to this traumatic childhood experience.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n Hypnotiq, who has a background in the Seattle tech industry, uses 3D printing and UV resin, alongside more traditional sculptural material, to create his artworks, which replicate popular media artefacts.<\/p>\n Apart from Hypnotiq, the Creator Console gallery showcased nine other artists during the three days of Art Basel. They include\u00a0Mr. Moda<\/a>,\u00a0Mekia Machine<\/a>,\u00a0John-Herbert Wright<\/a>,\u00a0ETTE ART<\/a>,\u00a0Giovanni Preziuso<\/a>,\u00a0M.
