2024 began by harkening back to the past, as an NFT collection using the now copyright-free Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse<\/a> character made waves.<\/p>\n

The biggest story of the month was the long-awaited news that the U.S. SEC had finally approved spot Bitcoin ETFs.<\/a><\/p>\n

On the business front, the IRS introduced new tax obligations<\/a>, Logan Paul announced a controversial CryptoZoo NFT buyback scheme<\/a>, and Visa launched a Web3 loyalty program<\/a>. Also, X waved goodbye to PFP NFTs<\/a>, Starbucks Korea kicked-off an NFT rewards program<\/a>, and GameStop announced the closure of their NFT marketplace<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In token news, Pixels unveiled their hotly-anticipated $PIXEL token<\/a>, the Moca Foundation announced the impending arrival of the $MOCA token<\/a>, and Phantom held a surprise launch for the $WEN community token.<\/a><\/p>\n

January also saw both Solana NFTs<\/a> and Polygon NFTs<\/a> overtake Ethereum in NFT trading for the first time \u2013 with the former also revealing their Solana Saga Chapter 2<\/a> mobile phone. Azuki surged in value amid rumors of a Weeb3 Foundation alliance<\/a>, and they announced their Azuki anime series<\/a>. Yuga Labs pushed Legends of the Mara to mobile<\/a>, announced Dookey Dash Unclogged<\/a>, and both revealed<\/a> and remastered their Otherside Trip 3 trailer.<\/a><\/p>\n

Elsewhere, CryptoUndeads<\/a> minted out, Nifty Island entered open beta<\/a>, Cool Cats partnered with Immutable<\/a>, Axie Infinity launched their Homeland beta<\/a>, Magic Eden introduced their multi-chain wallet<\/a>, and Pudgy Penguins revealed OverpassIP.<\/a><\/p>\n

February 2024: ERC-404, Pudgy\u2019s Rise and Record Sales<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The biggest story of February 2024 saw Yuga Labs acquire PROOF Collective<\/a> \u2013 with Yuga founder Greg Solano returning as CEO<\/a> shortly after.<\/p>\n

On the token front, this month saw the debut of the ERC-404 standard<\/a> \u2013 with the first-ever ERC-404 token, titled $PANDORA<\/a>, rapidly rising to a market cap in the hundreds of millions of dollars. The $PIXEL token<\/a> also saw its trading volume skyrocket, as a Binance listing saw the token achieve over $500 million USD of trading volume in a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n

February also saw Doodles partner with Casio G-SHOCK<\/a>, CryptoPunks unveil their Punk in Residence<\/a> program, and Magic Eden held their Retro Diamond drop<\/a> \u2013 ahead of the launch of their Ethereum marketplace<\/a>, and their reveal of the Creator\u2019s Alliance.<\/a> Yuga Labs had a busy month, with Bored & Hungry<\/a> expanding to Seoul and Serum City<\/a> going live \u2013 although they saw increased competition from the fast-rising Pudgy Penguins<\/a>, who partnered with Unstoppable Domains.<\/a><\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Polkadot<\/a> set a new record for NFT minting speed, Decentraland<\/a> pushed towards mobile, MetaMask<\/a> introduced real-time alerts, the Blast mainnet<\/a> was launched, Shardbound<\/a> was reintroduced on Immutable, Parallel<\/a> entered open beta, and an Autoglyph NFT<\/a> fetched $14.6 million USD \u2013 making it the biggest NFT sale since 2022.<\/p>\n

March 2024: Ordinals, Runestone and SBF<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bitcoin Ordinals project Runestone<\/a> captured the headlines in March 2024, minting and auctioning<\/a> the largest inscription to date, holding a multi-million dollar airdrop<\/a>, and forever changing the Bitcoin Ordinals ecosystem.<\/a><\/p>\n

Looking at brand adoption, Coachella<\/a> tied up with OpenSea, Ubisoft\u2019s Watch Dogs<\/a> got involved with Cross the Ages, and Sony filed a \u2018super-fungible token\u2019<\/a> patent. Starbucks closed their Odyssey NFT rewards<\/a> program, the MetaBirkin lawsuit<\/a> continued, Forbes revealed their Legacy Pass NFTs<\/a>, Wu-Tang Clan<\/a> headed to Bitcoin Ordinals, Netflix secured UK rights for NFT:WTF?<\/a>, and former FTX boss Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a> was sentenced to 25 years in prison.<\/p>\n

In gaming, Otherside held its Apes Come Home<\/a> event, Gods Unchained<\/a> hit mobile, the HYCHAIN mainnet<\/a> went live, Pixels<\/a> took Ronin to new heights, and OKX and Immutable announced a web3 gaming launchpad<\/a> \u2013 with Immutable also injecting $100 million into web3 gaming<\/a> with Polygon. On the funding front, Illuvium<\/a> raised $12 million, Off The Grid<\/a> raised $30 million, and Parallel<\/a> raised a staggering $35 million.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, CryptoPunk #3100<\/a> sold for $16 million, Kevin Rose<\/a> caught backlash after selling $1.2 million of his NFTs, Magic Eden airdropped Diamonds<\/a> to Ethereum OGs, Kaidro held the first free mint on Ronin<\/a>, Milady raised $18.7 million<\/a> in just 2 hours, a $WIF Mascot NFT<\/a> fetched $4.3 million, WAX partnered with Amazon<\/a>, Azuki unveiled AnimeChain<\/a> on Arbitrum, and Pudgy Penguins flipped BAYC<\/a> for the first time.<\/p>\n

April 2024: Rewards, $POOP and Runes Protocol<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The biggest story of the month was Immutable unveiling their $50 million USD rewards program The Main Quest<\/a>, with the aim to kick-start long-term growth in the Immutable ecosystem.<\/p>\n

On the business front, Square Enix re-released Final Fantasy VII<\/a> figures without NFT certificates, Mazda<\/a> partnered with Aster zkEVM, Avenged Sevenfold<\/a> revealed a Web3 season pass, Samsung released a \u2018NFT TV bundle\u2019<\/a>, and Adidas<\/a> partnered with STEPN.<\/p>\n

Tokens had a strong month, with Doodles creator @poopie launched Poopcoin ($POOP)<\/a> \u2013 announcing Dullsville and the Doodleverse<\/a><\/em> mere days later, and Doodles Space Mission S1<\/a> shortly thereafter \u2013 $DOGE<\/a> turned into fractionalised NFTs, and the Bitcoin Runes Protocol<\/a> made its debut \u2013 with Magic Eden Runes<\/a> and Dog memecoins<\/a> starring.<\/p>\n

In Web3 gaming, Square Enix<\/a> partnered with Animoca Brands Japan, a16z<\/a> launched its SPEEDRUN accelerator, and two Web3 gaming handhelds were announced \u2013 BitBoy<\/a> and the SuiPlay0X1<\/a>. MetalCore<\/a> held their second closed beta playtest, Ronin welcomed Ragnarok: Monster World<\/a>, Mythical Games switched to Polkadot<\/a>, Decentraland announced their first Game Expo<\/a>, Anichess<\/a> raised $1.8 million, and Yuga both transferred Legends of the Mara and HV-MTL<\/a> to Faraway, and announced Moonbirds Universe<\/a> \u2013 with sales of the Moonbirds NFT collection<\/a> jumping 227%.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the ENS Points System<\/a> launched and closed within 5 hours, OpenSea integrated ERC-721C<\/a>, NFTFEST<\/a> was announced for June, Bored & Hungry California<\/a> shut its doors, Dapper Labs<\/a>\u2018 legal woes continued, MetaMask began to spotlight eligible airdrops<\/a>, Christie\u2019s held their first Bitcoin Ordinals auction<\/a>, and CyberKongz Bitcoin NFTs<\/a> raised $5 million.<\/p>\n

May 2024: Super Punk World, Pudgy Toys and Enter The Garden<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

May 2024 saw two leading stories. First, Nina Chanel Abney<\/a> announced and revealed her CryptoPunks-backed Super Punk World<\/a> collection \u2013 though saw it immediately cancelled following community backlash. Second, Pudgy Penguins announced the expansion of Pudgy Toys to Target<\/a> stores across the U.S. after over 1 million sales \u2013 also revealing a partnership with Mythical Games<\/a> for a Pudgy-themed mobile game.<\/p>\n

On the business front, Casio celebrated its 50th anniversary with a watches NFT collection<\/a>, Cristiano Ronaldo faced legal trouble for his Binance CR7 NFTs<\/a>, and Quidd partnered with Animoca Brands Japan on Fairy Tail NFTs.<\/a><\/p>\n

In Web3 gaming, Axie debuted Duet Monsters<\/a> on mobile, Guild of Guardians\u2019 Age of the Dread<\/a> began, Medieval Empires<\/a> hit open beta, Draftables<\/a> sold out their Founder Pass NFTs in under 10 mins, and Immutable Passport<\/a> surpassed 1 million signups.<\/p>\n

In other news, Azuki premiered The Waiting Man \u2013 episode 1 of their Enter The Garden anime<\/a> \u2013 and partnered with Magic Eden on Satoshi Nakamoto hoodies<\/a>. Blur integrated Blast NFTs<\/a>, DeGods and y00ts returned to Solana<\/a> \u2013 with Solana also seeing a new SPL-404 NFT standard<\/a> and LayerZero integration<\/a> \u2013 CryptoPunk #741<\/a> sold for $800,000, VeeFriends<\/a> released Character Caps, Apes Capital<\/a> was unveiled, Phantom acquired Bitski<\/a>, OpenSea launched Get Based<\/a>, Milady Maker<\/a> shot up in value, Ledger Stax<\/a> began shipping, and Farcaster<\/a> sealed a $150 million investment.<\/p>\n

June 2024: Telegram Games, Ronin and Web3 AI<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Two stories captured particular attention in June 2024. Telegram games began to take off, with Hamster Kombat<\/a> gathering 78 million players, and the Trezor Safe 5 hardware wallet<\/a> was released.<\/p>\n

In business, Sotherby\u2019s announced a Golden Bored Apes auction<\/a>, McDonald\u2019s launched a metaverse<\/a>, Wu-Tang Clan\u2019s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin<\/em><\/a> saw a related NFT release, Konami launched their Resella<\/a> service on Avalanche, and OneFootball partnered with Mocaverse.<\/a><\/p>\n

Web3 gaming saw the launch of the Ronin Forge<\/a> and the Ronin zkEVM<\/a>, the reveal of Illuvium\u2019s open beta<\/a> July release, The Sandbox raise $20 million<\/a> at a $1 billion valuation, the unveiling of the Polygon Community Grants Program<\/a>, and Shrapnel\u2019s $100,000 STX3.1 playtest<\/a>. Also, Parallel<\/a> released on the Epic Games Store, HYTOPIA entered closed beta<\/a>, Blocklords Dynasty<\/a> debuted on Base, MetalCore introduced their $MCG token<\/a>, Worldwide Webb<\/a> rebranded to Soulbound, and ZED RUN<\/a> transitioned to ZEDx.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Web3 AI drew attention, with Play AI raising $4.3 million<\/a> and Grass AI<\/a> growing in popularity. Coinbase Learn<\/a> was launched, and the Coinbase Smart Wallet<\/a> was introduced. Dapper Labs settled their NBA Top Shot lawsuit<\/a>, Doodles Stoodio<\/a> moved to Base, and Pudgy Penguins announced their Igloo Inc.<\/a> parent company.<\/p>\n

July 2024: Ethereum ETFs, GTA 6 and Fortnite<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The biggest story of July 2024 came from the U.S. SEC, as Ethereum ETFs<\/a> were approved to begin trading on July 24.<\/p>\n

On the mainstream end, Attack on Titan<\/a> entered The Sandbox, rumours began to swirl on the possible inclusion of crypto and NFTs in GTA 6<\/a>, and Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney indicated that blockchain technology could be added to Fortnite<\/a> in future.<\/p>\n

In Web3 gaming, Deadfellaz began Wallhugger alpha testing<\/a>, Ubisoft\u2019s Champions Tactics<\/a> was released \u2013 with a free NFT mint<\/a> \u2013 Spellborne<\/a> entered open beta, Forgotten Runiverse migrated to Ronin<\/a>, and Pixelverse<\/a> secured an additional $2 million. Soulbound won the Adventure Together<\/a> category and Grand Prize at the 2024 Discord App Pitch<\/a>, Axie Infinity: Homeland\u2019s avatar mode<\/a> was released, Immortal Rising 2<\/a> launched on Immutable, Polygon\u2019s $MATIC migrated to $POL<\/a>, MetalCore Arena<\/a> was announced, and the Illuvium mainnet<\/a> went live.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, ChainGPT updated its AI NFT generator<\/a>, Consensys acquired Wallet Guard<\/a>, Ledger revealed their Clear Signing<\/a> initiative, and Cool Cats launched a manga series<\/a>. Privasea<\/a> began to take off, KnownOrigin<\/a> ceased operations, Aavegotchi<\/a> went 3D, Doodles Records<\/a> was unveiled, the Ledger Flex<\/a> was announced, and RTFKT revealed Project Animus.<\/a><\/p>\n

Looking at business, Doodles partnered with both AriZona<\/a> and Adidas<\/a>, Ubisoft partnered with Arbitrum for Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E.<\/a>, Lamborghini partnered with Animoca Brands<\/a>, Illuvium teamed up with Samsung<\/a>, and BAYC teamed up with BAPE<\/a> once again. Also, Sony announced the Soneium blockchain<\/a>, PGA Tour Rise<\/a> was revealed, and Donald Trump released Series 4 of his digital trading cards.<\/a><\/p>\n

Web3 gaming saw Lumiterra enter closed beta<\/a>, Mocaverse release their Mocaland Experiences<\/a> in The Sandbox, Off The Grid expand their Pioneers Program<\/a>, and Ragnarok: Monster World<\/a> also enter closed beta. Otherside announced Project Dragon Episode 2<\/a>, Gods Unchained<\/a> pushed a major update, and Immutable hit a rough patch, with the closure of the Immutable X marketplace<\/a>, and Ember Sword migrating to Mantle.<\/a><\/p>\n

In other news, Azuki unveiled an animated shorts series<\/a>, Trezor celebrated their 10th anniversary<\/a>, DFZ Labs partnered with Unstoppable Domains<\/a>, Sotheby\u2019s ran a Digital Art Day sale<\/a>, and Magic Eden announced their $ME token<\/a>, and launched their NFT mint terminal.<\/a><\/p>\n

September 2024: Doodles, Mobiles and Anime.com<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

September 2024 saw two leading stories. Doodles premiered Dullsville and the Doodleverse<\/a> at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Solana Mobile revealed the Solana Seeker<\/a> mobile phone.<\/p>\n

In Web3 gaming, MetalCore Season 1<\/a> debuted \u2013 with a Season 1 NFT sale<\/a> to boot \u2013 Nyan Heroes<\/a> entered Season 3, and the Sequence Unreal SDK<\/a> became verified. Ashes of Mankind<\/a> announced their Revenants NFT drop, CCP Games revealed EVE Frontier<\/a>, MixMob<\/a> hit Season 2, seven new games joined Ronin<\/a>, and the launch date for Illuvium: Beyond Wave 3<\/a> was announced.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t all sunshine and rainbows however, as Dimensions<\/a> dropped their blockchain features, and Tales of Elleria<\/a> announced the end of active development.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, rumours surfaced surrounding blockchain tech and the iPhone 16<\/a>, ApeCoin revealed their blueprint for ApeChain<\/a>, Gamma<\/a> revealed a unified Bitcoin Ordinals and Stacks platform, Azuki revealed anime.com<\/a>, and Magic Eden and Mocaverse revealed MagicMoca<\/a> \u2013 with the former also adopting optional royalties<\/a> on EVM blockchains.<\/p>\n

October 2024: Off The Grid, ApeChain and X Empire<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

October 2024 featured a top-tier double whammy, as Off The Grid entered Early Access<\/a>, and ApeChain was launched<\/a> with the debut of Top Trader.<\/p>\n

Web3 gaming saw Gods Unchained release their Tower of Dread<\/a> expansion, Wild Forest<\/a> announce the token generation event (TGE) for their $WF token, CryptoKitties<\/a> return as a Telegram game, Shardbound hit open beta<\/a>, and Decentraland<\/a> launch a desktop client. Guild of Guardians<\/a> released their Frostmire expansion, PARAVOX<\/a> announced a $130,000 USD esports tournament, and Parallel<\/a> announced a $250,000 esports championship.<\/p>\n

On top of that, Deadfellaz revealed their Death Touch TCG<\/a>, Opti Games raised $2 million for Sparkball<\/a>, MetalCore moved to Solana<\/a>, and the X Empire airdrop<\/a> was met with player frustration.<\/p>\n

In other news, Consensys<\/a> announced a 20% cut of their workforce, Google Cloud at Aptos Labs launched GameStack<\/a>, and GR1D Network<\/a> debuted web3 gaming credits on Amazon. Sequence partnered with Transak<\/a>, CryptoPunk #1563 was sold for a questionable $56 million<\/a>, Faraway unveiled both the Faraway Creator Suite<\/a> and FChain<\/a>, and a Captain Laserhawk NFT collection<\/a> hit Magic Eden. Furthermore, Ubisoft released Champions Tactics<\/a>, 10KTF was acquired<\/a>, and Improbable announced the launch of the Somnia blockchain.<\/a><\/p>\n

November 2024: Trump, McDonald\u2019s and Rektguy<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

The biggest story of November 2024 was undoubtedly Trump\u2019s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election<\/a>, which sent crypto markets soaring.<\/p>\n

Another big development gave NFTs huge visibility, with McDonalds<\/a> partnering with Doodles<\/a> on a large-scale U.S. holiday campaign.<\/p>\n

In Web3 gaming, Immutable was hit with a Wells notice<\/a>, Pudgy Penguins announced Pudgy Party<\/a>, and Off The Grid continued to rise \u2013 with their Save Democracy pack<\/a>, the Clash for Cash<\/a> daily tournaments, and the $600,000 All-Star Invitational<\/a>. Pixels revealed their 2025 goals<\/a>, Animoca Brands secured $10 million<\/a> in funding, Parallel released their Aftermath expansion<\/a>, Nakamigos\u2019 CLOAKS Games<\/a> were scheduled for an upcoming release, and Moonray<\/a> distributed over 220,000 NFTs in just 48 hours.<\/p>\n

On the flipside, Sky Mavis laid off 21% of its workforce<\/a> \u2013 in spite of announcing a new Axie Infinity game for 2025 \u2013 and Kraken announced the closure of their NFT marketplace.<\/a><\/p>\n

Rektguy had a big month, securing $1.5 million in funding for Rekt Brands<\/a>, launching Rekt Drinks, and following that with the $REKT token<\/a>. OpenSea V2<\/a> was teased, a rumoured OpenSea token<\/a> drove Gemesis NFT trading, Magic Eden revealed further details on their $ME token<\/a>, and Azuki brought Fate to Anime.com.<\/a><\/p>\n

December 2024: Bitcoin, $PENGU and $ME<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

December 2024 saw Bitcoin hit $100,000<\/a> for the first time as both the crypto and NFT markets continued to soar.<\/p>\n

The month also saw two big token launches. Pudgy Penguins launched $PENGU<\/a> \u2013 which caused a sharp rise and fall in the floor price of Pudgy Penguins NFTs<\/a> \u2013 which hit a $3 billion market cap<\/a>, and Magic Eden launched their $ME token<\/a> \u2013 though faced backlash<\/a> over technical issues with the airdrop. A third upcoming token was rumoured, as OpenSea teased the launch of an $OCEAN token.<\/a><\/p>\n

Web3 gaming saw EVE Frontier enter Early Access<\/a>, OverTrip launch on the Epic Games Store<\/a>, a major update to Off The Grid<\/a>, Shrapnel\u2019s Neon Machine announce a new CEO<\/a>, and Nakamigos launch their Rise of the Wolf<\/a> RPG. Two $150,000,000 Web3 gaming funds were also established, with Beam Ventures<\/a> in Abu Dhabi, and Big Time Studios<\/a> with their Open Loot Fund.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Nike announced the closure of RTFKT<\/a> \u2013 with rivals Adidas revealing their ALTS NFT collection<\/a> a week later \u2013 Animoca Brands backed Igloo Inc.<\/a>, Chonks debuted on Base<\/a>, CyberKongz disclosed their Wells notice<\/a>, and Avalanche supported the Beam Network<\/a> by minting $500,000 of Beam Node Tokens.<\/p>\n
