Keyed nonces could make it more difficult to link transactions to the same user, while recent-root mechanisms could allow applications to verify recent blockchain states without exposing a complete transaction history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FOCIL, meanwhile, is intended to make transaction inclusion less dependent on block builders, strengthening Ethereum\u2019s resistance to censorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shift is significant because privacy has traditionally been handled primarily by applications and Layer-2 networks rather than Ethereum\u2019s base protocol. Buterin\u2019s updated roadmap suggests privacy is increasingly being treated as a fundamental network feature.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ethereum_Prepares_for_the_Quantum_Era\"\/><b>Ethereum Prepares for the Quantum Era<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-quantum security has also become a much more prominent part of Ethereum\u2019s development strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum relies on cryptographic systems that could eventually be vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Preparing for that possibility is complicated because replacing existing signatures with quantum-resistant alternatives could increase transaction sizes, verification costs and network bandwidth requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roadmap therefore explores technologies including LeanSPHINCS signatures, signature aggregation and \u201czkzk frames\u201d as possible components of a future quantum-resistant architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin has also pointed to account-level protection as an area where preparation could begin before a complete protocol-wide transition becomes necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Ethereum, the challenge is not simply becoming quantum-safe. The network must achieve that goal without undermining its scalability or making transactions significantly more expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Native_Rollups_Enter_Ethereums_Scaling_Strategy\"\/><b>Native Rollups Enter Ethereum\u2019s Scaling Strategy<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another major addition is native rollups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nftplazas.com\/ethereum-eip-8363-tapered-issuance-burn-staking-ratio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> currently relies heavily on Layer-2 rollups, which execute transactions outside the main network and use Ethereum for security and data availability. These systems generally maintain their own proof mechanisms, contracts and infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native rollups could move part of the verification process directly into Ethereum\u2019s base protocol, creating a more standardized framework for verifying state transitions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin said the concept was not included in the 2023 roadmap because zero-knowledge proof technology was not mature enough at the time. Advances in SNARKs and related systems have since made native rollups a more realistic possibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethereum\u2019s broader scaling philosophy is changing alongside this development. Instead of trying to scale every activity through one general-purpose mechanism, the network could increasingly use specialized systems optimized for high-volume activities such as token transfers, decentralized trading and privacy applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The updated roadmap also introduces potential markets for future blob and gas capacity. Such \u201cblob futures\u201d and \u201cgas futures\u201d could allow users and Layer-2 networks to secure future capacity in advance, helping reduce uncertainty around costs during periods of heavy network demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_Could_Help_Verify_Ethereums_Code\"\/><b>AI Could Help Verify Ethereum\u2019s Code<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial intelligence is another increasingly important part of Ethereum\u2019s technical vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin has argued that AI-assisted formal verification could make it easier to prove that complex software behaves according to its intended specifications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formal verification is particularly challenging for blockchain protocols because Ethereum consists of multiple clients, cryptographic systems and interconnected layers. AI could potentially help developers analyze and verify larger portions of the protocol more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STARK technology is closely connected to this effort. Recursive STARKs can produce proofs that verify other proofs, allowing increasingly large amounts of computation to be validated efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buterin has suggested that similar verification techniques could eventually be applied across Ethereum\u2019s execution, consensus and data layers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Could_Ethereum_Eventually_Move_Beyond_the_EVM\"\/><b>Could Ethereum Eventually Move Beyond the EVM?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roadmap also hints at a potentially major change to Ethereum\u2019s execution architecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emergence of \u201czkzk frames\u201d could require the protocol to expose an instruction set beyond the Ethereum Virtual Machine, or EVM.
