The influencer notes that he was trying to download video streaming software. Instead of going for the organic result, he opted for the Google Ad link, thinking it was the same thing. What he didn\u2019t know is that the ad had malware which led to the loss of his entire crypto portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>The Twitter influencer who goes by the name \u2018NFT God\u2019 made the revelation through a series of tweets on Sunday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last night my entire digital livelihood was violated. <\/p>\n<p>Every account connected to me both personally and professionally was hacked and used to hurt others. <\/p>\n<p>Less importantly, I lost a life changing amount of my net worth<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NFT God (@NFT_GOD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NFT_GOD\/status\/1614442000958324739?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 15, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He goes on to add that he tried to download <a href=\"https:\/\/obsproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OBS<\/a>, an open-source video streaming software. Instead of clicking on the organic result, he clicked on its advertised version and proceeded to install it. It took him hours to notice the compromise.<\/p>\n<p>The influencer, whose real name is Alex, notes that it wasn\u2019t until he saw a few phishing tweets from two other Twitter accounts under him that he realized something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The attackers also breached his Substack account and sent phishing emails to his 16,000 subscribers. Phishing attacks are prevalent in the NFT space \u2013 here are <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnewstoday.com\/2022\/02\/22\/nft-phishing-scams-how-to-see-it-coming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some tips<\/a> to help see them coming.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-did-the-nft-influencer-lose-in-the-google-ad-scam\">What did the NFT Influencer Lose in the Google Ad Scam?<\/h2>\n<p>In total, the influencer lost at least 19 ETH, worth almost $30,000 at the time. Also, the scammer took multiple NFTs from his wallet, including a Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFT with a current floor price of $25,000.<\/p>\n<p>Blockchain data shows that the attackers moved the ETH through multiple wallets. The scammer then transferred it to the FixedFloat DEX and exchanged it for unidentified cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>According to Alex, his grievous mistake was setting his hardware wallet as a <a href=\"https:\/\/corporatefinanceinstitute.com\/resources\/cryptocurrency\/hot-wallet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hot wallet<\/a>. This allowed the hackers to gain access to the NFTs and crypto holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Alex\u2019s case is the latest in a growing trend of Google Ads being used to target unsuspecting users. On January 12, Cyble, a cybersecurity firm, warned of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.cyble.com\/2023\/01\/12\/rhadamanthys-new-stealer-spreading-through-google-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>\u201cRhadamanthys Stealer,<\/em><\/a><em>\u201c<\/em> an information-stealing malware.
