Today, the blockchain gaming market is a billion-dollar industry, valued at roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/Market-Reports\/blockchain-gaming-market-167926225.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4.6 billion dollars<\/a> in 2022. Still, this growing slice of the gaming industry has decades\u2019 worth of catching up to do with the mainstream gaming market, which saw a valuation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grandviewresearch.com\/industry-analysis\/gaming-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an estimated $232.02 billion<\/a> in the same year.<\/p>\n<p>But not all brands are going full throttle on Web3 features in their games. In 2022, Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/culture\/heres-how-gamers-are-responding-to-minecrafts-sweeping-nft-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took a hard stance<\/a> on NFTs in its proprietary <em>Minecraft<\/em> game, banning them outright.\u00a0As a general consumer block, gamers themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/heres-why-many-gamers-rightfully-arent-so-game-on-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">haven\u2019t been very keen<\/a> on NFTs, either. But where do mainstream gaming icons stand on NFTs now? Here\u2019s a look at the biggest gaming brand\u2019s positions and policies regarding NFTs and Web3.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ubisoft\">Ubisoft<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>A collage of protagonists from Ubisoft\u2019s wildly-successful walking simulator. Credit: Ubisoft<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ubisoft, best known for developing and publishing the long-running (and wildly successful) <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em> series, was one of the first big players in the mainstream gaming industry to try their hands at working blockchain technology into their products. April 2021 saw Ubisoft partner up with <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/guides\/everything-to-know-about-the-tezos-blockchain-and-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tezos<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/ubisoft-joins-tezos-blockchain-ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate backer<\/a>, its then-latest partnership in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/ubisoft-fig-other-companies-form-blockchain-gaming-alliance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a series of moves<\/a> that saw the gaming company attempt to build its roots in the growing Web3 ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, these moves were made out of sight of their massive audience of gamers. That all changed in late 2021, when Ubisoft announced <a href=\"https:\/\/quartz.ubisoft.com\/welcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the launch of Quartz<\/a>, a mobile app platform where users could purchase in-game cosmetics for their title <em>Ghost Recon Breakpoint<\/em> as NFTs.<\/p>\n<p>However, it didn\u2019t stick around for long. In company president Yosuke Matsuda\u2019s yearly letter addressing Square Enix\u2019s plans for the coming year, he announced his intentions to bring one of the world\u2019s biggest gaming companies into Web3. With the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/collectibles\/final-fantasy-vii-nft-project-to-honor-the-games-25th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an NFT collection celebrating the 25th anniversary<\/a> of its landmark title <em>Final Fantasy VII<\/em>, along with the announcement of its upcoming blockchain-based game <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jp.square-enix.com\/company\/en\/news\/2022\/html\/3e56b52029c74aba7c1d6a9e4fdd6ca8ed86107c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SYMBIOGENESIS<\/a><\/em>, 2022 saw the company take its first big steps into Web3.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of Matsuda\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/news\/square-enix-is-bringing-blockchain-games-crypto-coins-and-more-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company-wide plans for 2023<\/a>, Square Enix seems poised to sink its boots further into Web3, with several other blockchain games and NFT projects planned for release within the year. On the one hand, it offers tools like the <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/samples\/microsoft\/azure-non-fungible-token-solution-accelerator\/azure-nft-non-fungible-token-solution-accelerator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Azure NFT Solution Accelerator<\/a> to subscribers of its enterprise-level cloud computing platform as part of its growing suite of <a href=\"https:\/\/azuremarketplace.microsoft.com\/en\/marketplace\/apps\/xnfinity1623252556141.nft_xnfy-lab?tab=Overview&amp;exp=ubp8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Web3-first developer tools for content creation<\/a>. In the gaming sector, it rolled out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/xbox-will-now-use-blockchain-for-gaming-rights-and-royalties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xbox Enterprise Blockchain Platform<\/a> in late 2020, making access to <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/nft-community-is-split-over-creator-royalties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">royalties<\/a> a faster, more transparent process for creators working in the indie gaming sector.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, one of Microsoft\u2019s properties dominated headlines in late 2022 following its <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/culture\/heres-how-gamers-are-responding-to-minecrafts-sweeping-nft-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strongly-worded ban<\/a> of any implementation of blockchain technology on its platform. That property? <em>Minecraft<\/em>, arguably the most popular game in the world. In the 1990s, the game developer pioneered <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/lore-what-to-know-about-this-new-type-of-nft-utility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the art of storytelling<\/a> in video games with the release of its massively-successful <em>Half-Life <\/em>franchise. In 2003, the game developer launched Steam, the undisputed leader in digital games distribution for PC gamers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Given the ubiquity of Steam for gamers, surely Valve also played a role in making blockchain games accessible to millions of gamers, right? Sadly, that isn\u2019t the case. In late 2021, the company made its stance on Web3 clear when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/10\/15\/22728425\/valve-steam-blockchain-nft-crypto-ban-games-age-of-rust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banned all blockchain games and NFTs<\/a> from Steam. Valve Co-Founder and President Gabe Newell later cited <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/guides\/scams-explained-what-are-rug-pulls-and-are-they-a-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bad actors<\/a> as the primary motivation behind Steam\u2019s ban in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurogamer.net\/gabe-newell-explains-why-steam-banned-nfts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an interview with <em>Eurogamer<\/em><\/a>, stating \u201cblockchains as a technology are a great technology, but the ways in which [they have] been utilized [currently are] all pretty sketchy. Credit: Gala Games<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Contrary to Valve\u2019s stance on blockchain games, <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/culture\/epic-games-to-minecraft-dont-force-your-nft-views-on-others\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Epic Games<\/a> welcomes games of all kinds onto the Epic Games Store. That of course includes blockchain games. Notably, <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/guides\/gala-a-platform-spending-billions-to-build-a-web3-powerhouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gala Games\u2019<\/a> upcoming Western-themed multiplayer shooter <em>Grit<\/em>, touted as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.protocol.com\/bulletins\/epic-blockchain-gala-games-grit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the first high-profile blockchain games<\/a> slated for release on a mainstream game distribution platform. Other early blockchain-centric entrants on the platform include <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.mythicalgames.com\/games\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mythical Games\u2019<\/a> <em>Blankos Block Party<\/em>, which went into early access in September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the <em>Minecraft <\/em>debacle that best illustrated the clash between mainstream gaming audiences and their more crypto-savvy counterparts, Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney urged users in a tweet to keep an open mind on this emerging technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimSweeneyEpic\/status\/1550350821963038721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encouraging them<\/a> to \u201cmake their own decisions\u201d on whether engaging Web3 was right for them on an individual level.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-are-we-there-yet\">Are we there yet?<\/h2>\n<p>Given the sheer magnitude of an endeavor developing <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/blockchain-gaming-needs-triple-a-titles-to-truly-go-mainstream\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modern blockbuster gaming titles<\/a> primed for mainstream gaming audiences has become, it\u2019s still hard to get a clear picture of where NFTs, crypto, and anything involving blockchain tech fits into the mainstream gaming industry. But if Microsoft\u2019s approach to adopting blockchain technology is anything to go by, the best place for this emerging technology might not directly be in games after all. At least, as far as the mainstream gaming industry goes. Blockchain technology holds massive potential in making transactions more secure and more transparent, which is sure to be a boon for the scores of individuals that typically work on modern game releases.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, blockchain technology has evolved in a separate direction from its mainstream counterpart. And that\u2019s not an entirely bad thing. Although blockchain gaming has grown into a billion-dollar industry, it\u2019s still in its teething phase. If these two sectors of gaming are to continue growing, they\u2019ll have to remain separate entities for the time being.
