The proof is not just in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ocula.com\/magazine\/art-news\/nfts-now-constitute-16-percent-of-the-art-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global art market share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of NFTs or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/yuga-labs-cryptopunks-punk-legacy-project-ica-miami-2211586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutional<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/refik-anadol-unsupervised-moma-2242329\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">embrace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the medium, but in the burgeoning number of platforms vending blockchain art.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tonic.xyz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tonic<\/a> is the latest to enter the marketplace, promising \u201ca safe and welcoming space\u201d for crypto natives and newbies alike to discover and collect fine art NFTs. The gallery launches on January 26 with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tonicxyz.typeform.com\/launchcall?typeform-source=tonic.xyz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a kick-off call<\/span><\/a> and backed by<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0founding team of art world heavy-hitters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susannah Maybank, the former head of digital at Gagosian, and Mariam Naficy, the founder of design marketplace Minted, serve as Tonic\u2019s CEO and chairman, respectively. Their founding partners are not limited to <\/span>designers Yves Behar and Brigette Romanek, architect India Mahdavi, and venture capitalist Brit Morin. Photo courtesy of Tonic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On January 31, Tonic will drop its genesis collection, a generative art series titled \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tonic.xyz\/collection\/chromesthesia-ascend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chromesthesia: Ascend\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by artist Jaime Derringer (also Tonic\u2019s head of community). To explore the experience of chromesthesia, wherein colors are evoked in response to auditory stimuli, Derringer has applied algorithmic disruptions, coded to mimic a MIDI controller, to her original works on paper and digital paintings. The results are pastel abstractions that, while A.I.-manipulated, retain a painterly depth and kineticism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This handmade effect, according to Naficy, is key to Tonic\u2019s broader project to bridge the digital and physical. To that end, each collection encompasses not just NFTs, but print editions. \u201cWe veered towards selecting artists who we thought showed evidence of the hand in their work,\u201d she told Artnet News. \u201cWe felt that would print very well also.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Naficy, such hybrid releases might offer an effective on-ramp for more traditional Web2 collectors who are seeking a \u201cphysicality\u201d to their digital purchases. But Naficy also recognizes the potential to convert NFT buyers into art collectors\u2014the fine art NFT segment, she points out, having grown to $1.3 billion in sales in the first three-quarters of 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think there\u2019s been a lot of momentum in this sector around new collectors, and just engagement and excitement in this part of the market,\u201d she said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community engagement and education, both cornerstones of Tonic\u2019s offering, will be vital to such an effort, said Naficy\u2014for collectors to not just learn about crypto art and artists, but to get acquainted with fellow collectors. \u201cIt\u2019s supposed to be a pretty social experience,\u201d she noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe growth of a new generation of art collectors is really important actually.
