After years of helming the beloved marketplace and driving innovation at the forefront of the NFT space, Co-Founders Duncan and Griffin Cock Foster <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dccockfoster\/status\/1618239862272069632?s=20&amp;t=VWTk71i29yaNV5RmB5WcMg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> they would be stepping down from their leadership positions at the company.<\/p>\n<p>Ownership now rests with parent company Gemini\u2019s Co-Founders, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. The torch of leadership has been passed to Eddie Ma (technical leader) and Tara Harris (leader for non-tech).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Some news \u2014 after almost 4 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gcockfoster?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@gcockfoster<\/a> and I are departing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gemini?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@gemini<\/a> and are passing the baton at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/niftygateway?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@niftygateway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This journey has been an incredible ride, but Griffin and I are founders at heart and we want to start another company.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83e\uddf5 w\/ some thoughts below:<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 duncancockfoster.eth | Nifty Gateway (@dccockfoster) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dccockfoster\/status\/1618239862272069632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Many were surprised at the announcement, speculating whether the move had to do with the state of the crypto and tech industries or even Gemini itself, which has been experiencing difficulties in response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/187534\/gemini-earn-unable-to-meet-customer-redemptions-as-genesis-unit-pauses-withdrawals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">situation with its lending partner<\/a>, Genesis Global Capital. However, Duncan says this is not the case and that he and his brother\u2019s decision was not a sleight to Gemini in any form.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe are entrepreneurs at heart, and we want to get back to entrepreneur-ing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Duncan Cock Foster<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is no denying that crypto and NFT markets are going through a tumultuous time right now, and Gemini is no exception. But betting against the Winklevoss twins is a terrible idea,\u201d Duncan said in an interview with nft now. \u201cThey are in the top 0.01 percent of the world\u2019s most determined people, and I am confident that Gemini will emerge from this crypto winter stronger than ever before. Our decision to leave was due to the fact that we are entrepreneurs at heart, and we want to get back to entrepreneur-ing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As previously mentioned, the primary factor behind the Cock Foster\u2019s decision to leave was simply that their time had come. In his Twitter thread, Duncan said that when Nifty Gateway was originally acquired, he and his brother gave themselves a threshold of four years before they would inevitably leave to start another company \u2014 regardless of how good or bad things were going by that time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing founders, we knew that we always wanted to found another company at some point,\u201d Duncan said. \u201cI love the team at Gemini and the Gemini mission, but being the founder of a company is a very different thing than running a division of a larger company, even if said larger company is one that you love and respect. Ultimately that is what guided our decision more than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-s-next\">What\u2019s next<\/h2>\n<p>According to Duncan\u2019s thread, this transition has been in the works for months. And to assuage the potential concerns of those within the NG community, he stated that he and his brother would publicly outline a roadmap and a plan for its future in the coming weeks. Personally, though, the Cock Foster brothers don\u2019t know where they\u2019re headed next.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we said that we don\u2019t have any specific plans for the future, we meant it. We have worked in the crypto sector for a long time, and it is the industry that we know best, so it is likely that the next company we start will also be in the crypto sector,\u201d Duncan said. \u201cWe really don\u2019t know for sure, and our only immediate plan is to get back to tinkering and exploring. They both remain very optimistic about the long-term viability of the NFT ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Griffin and I reflect on the ecosystem now compared to the ecosystem in 2018 when we first got involved, it\u2019s incredible how much progress has been made.
