The move follows strong backlash from its tabletop gaming community. The announcement comes after weeks of contemplation as the entity sought to protect its intellectual property from being exploited by big business and third parties.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier last month, Wizard of the Coast revealed it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dndbeyond.com\/posts\/1423-an-update-on-the-open-game-license-ogl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">planned <\/a>to edit its Open Game License (OGL) to address three key issues. Among them were those \u201c<em>attempting to use D&amp;D in Web3, blockchain games, and NFTs.\u201d <\/em>Thus, the entity sought to make it clear that OGL content was <em>\u201climited to tabletop roleplaying content like campaigns, modules, and supplements.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the move would have blocked creators from creating D&amp;D-inspired NFTs. The announcement caused an uproar within the tabletop community as they felt the edit was unfair.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Surprised by Poll Results<\/h2>\n<p>Seeing how many individuals were against the move, D&amp;D publishers decided to run a poll before implementing the update.<\/p>\n<p>As they would find out, about 86% of those that responded to the survey were<em> \u201cdissatisfied with the draft [virtual tabletop] policy,\u201d<\/em> as it included language prohibiting derivative <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnewstoday.com\/2023\/01\/19\/how-2023-began-for-nfts-main-highlights-for-the-past-2-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"How 2023 began for NFTs: Main Highlights for the Past 2 Weeks\">NFTs <\/a>from third-party creators.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>In a blog post, the company wrote, <em>\u201cWe wanted to limit the OGL to [tabletop role-playing games].\u201d<\/em> They go on to add that <em>\u201cwith this new approach, we are setting that aside and counting on your choices to define the future of play.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But the overwhelming support for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnewstoday.com\/2022\/10\/18\/what-is-a-cc0-nft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Creative Commons license<\/a>, which frees content for any use, left them no choice.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the entity had no option but to abandon its planned update of the Open Game License.
