Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has added a new stage to the Ethereum technical roadmap, one that aims to improve censorship resistance and decentralization of the Ethereum network.<\/p>\n
The Ethereum network\u2019s new plans were revealed<\/a> by Buterin in a Nov. 5 Twitter post \u2014 which introduced \u201cThe Scourge\u201d in a now expanded six-part technical roadmap. <\/p>\n Following Ethereum\u2019s shift to a proof-of-stake (PoS) network<\/a> on Sept. 15, Ethereum has been in the second stage \u2014 \u201cThe Surge \u2014 with the goal of getting to 100,000 transactions per second through rollups. <\/p>\n The updated technical roadmap now inserts \u201cThe Scourge\u201d as the new third stage, which will then be followed by the previously-known stages \u2014 The Verge, The Purge and The Splurge.<\/p>\n Updated roadmap diagram! pic.twitter.com\/MT9BKgYcJH<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) November 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n According to the Ethereum roadmap, the goal of The Scourge is to \u201censure reliable and credibly neutral transaction inclusion and to avoid centralization and other protocol risks from MEV.\u201d<\/p>\n The Ethereum co-founder\u2019s call for a more \u201ccredibly neutral\u201d consensus layer comes as miners have been known to exploit transactions on the Ethereum network<\/a> to their favor. <\/p>\n Buterin has previously<\/a> described a credibly neutral mechanism as one which “does not discriminate for or against any specific people.”<\/p>\n Miner Extractable Value (MEV)<\/a> occurs when a miner front-runs other participants in the network by deciding which transactions are to be placed in a block and in what order.<\/p>\n This allows miners to duplicate all winning deals from the mempool and execute their transactions ahead of arbitrage seekers or anyone attempting to make a profit. <\/p>\n As a result, Ethereum has become associated with a higher degree of centralization and censorship following The Merge.<\/p>\n Following the network\u2019s transition to PoS, the percentage of blocks compliant with the U.S Office of Foreign Asset Control<\/a> (OFAC) reached 73% on Nov. 3 \u2014 a figure many consider to be far too high.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ethereum bull and founder of The Daily Gwei Anthony Sassano previously said in a Twitter post on Oct. 15 that censorship resistance is \u201cmore important than scaling\u201d at the current moment. <\/p>\n Ethereum protocol upgrades in order of importance over the next 6-12 months:<\/p>\n – Beacon Chain withdrawals Just my humble opinion – censorship resistance is more important than scaling right now<\/p>\n \u2014 sassal.eth (@sassal0x) October 15, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n While the full details of The Scourge have not been disclosed, the Ethereum co-founder recently proposed a \u201cPartial Block Auction\u201d solution where a block builder is only afforded the right to decide some of the contents of the block. <\/p>\n Other proposals to combat censorship at the consensus layer<\/a> have been put forward \u2014 such as Ethereum research and development company Flashbots\u2019 Single Unifying Auctions for Value Expression (SUAVE) solution. <\/p>\n Related: <\/em><\/strong>\u2018Not even a single TX has been censored on ETH\u2019 \u2014 Cyber Capital founder<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n Buterin also confirmed an update to \u201cThe Verge\u201d \u2014 which will now involve the integration of Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge (SNARK)<\/a> technology onto Ethereum. <\/p>\n\n
