Available starting today, the artist\u2019s digital bouquets are comprised of flowers that were hacked, without permission, from the source codes of classic games including <em>Final Fantasy<\/em>, <em>Minecraft<\/em>, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each plant has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artwrld.com\/articles\/flowers-that-never-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special value within its native virtual world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Magid\u2019s bouquets, you may find the Silent Princess from <em>The Legend of Zelda<\/em> series, which can be used for a stealth boost effect, or the Fire Flower from <em>Super Mario Bros<\/em>, which grants its users the power to throw balls of flame. When it comes to established artists making NFTs, the truth is that the number of poorly thought-out projects far outweighs the interesting ones. But Magid, who said she \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongly dislikes the vast majority of NFTs,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t do anything that\u2019s poorly thought-out. Whether she\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillmagid.com\/projects\/lobby-7-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hijacking a public TV monitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillmagid.com\/projects\/evidence-locker-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having herself surveilled by police<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her work is always meticulously researched, and she often inserts herself into the very systems she\u2019s interrogating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if there was ever an artist to make an interesting NFT, it\u2019s Magid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The artist\u2019s bouquets are, at face value, simple NFTs\u2014which is to say that they look and act like digital collectibles, equal parts art object and speculative asset. It goes back to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tender<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/jill-magid-penny-project-1915150\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magid\u2019s 2020 Creative Time artwork<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for which she laser-engraved the phrase \u201cTHE BODY WAS ALREADY SO FRAGILE\u201d on the edge of 120,000 pennies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Front of mind for the artist then was the ironic metaphorical contradiction between pandemic-era rhetoric around the struggling economy, which was often characterized as a financial \u201cbody\u201d in need of resuscitation, and the rhetoric around human lives, so often reduced to data points on death toll graphs. To Magid, the ubiquitous penny\u2014a financial token worth virtually nothing that suddenly became symbolically charged as a vector of transmission\u2014symbolized the intersection of the bodily and the economic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To disseminate the engraved pennies, Magid dropped them off, roll by roll, at bodegas around New York City. While doing so, she began to think about the flowers for sale outside so many of the stores. (She even recreated rows of bodega flowers for a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tender<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-related <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themodern.org\/exhibition\/focus-jill-magid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exhibition at the Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jill Magid x Artwrld: Out-Game Flowers\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/795363502?h=9b25207211&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her research, Magid learned that bodega flowers come from the same places as those found at upscale florists. Most are grown in industrialized farms in Europe or South America, then sent to the Netherlands to be graded on a scale based on criteria like stem length and blossom diameter. Low-graded flowers get shipped to New York\u2019s corner stores, where they live only a few days. Many aren\u2019t even purchased at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magid learned that what we as consumers think of as a natural symbol of beauty, is, in fact, a carefully controlled asset propped up by a wasteful international economy. The plants <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cseemed like they were masking so many transactions and so many value systems inside of them,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was at the height of her flower fascination that Nato Thompson, the curator and founding partner of Artwrld, approached the artist about doing an NFT project. \u201cIt\u2019s a shame flowers don\u2019t grow on the internet,\u201d the she recalled telling Thompson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell actually they do,\u201d he replied, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artwrld.com\/articles\/do-flowers-grow-on-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noting<\/a> that flowers, like NFTs, symbolize a \u201cmerging of aesthetics and value.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2255741\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2255741\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2255741 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2023\/02\/smbq_041-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"A small bouquet from Jill Magid's &quot;Out-Game Flowers&quot; NFT collection. Courtesy of the artist and Artwrld.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou know about Steven Bannon?\u201d Thompson asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the curator was referring to was gold farming, or the practice of hiring underpaid laborers in China and elsewhere to harvest rare, in-game items\u2014as with World of Warcraft\u2019s Black Lotus\u2014to sell them outside the game for heavily marked-up prices. Before he became the editor of ultra-right news site Breitbart, Bannon served on the board, and then as CEO, for Internet Gaming Entertainment, a company built around this exploitative model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this bizarre story, the project suddenly clicked for Magid, and \u201cOut-Game Flowers\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was born. Courtesy of the artist and Artwrld.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how much do Magid\u2019s NFTs cost?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span>150 of her 165 bouquets are smaller and run buyers $325 to $550. They\u2019re priced to sell, the artist explained; as with pennies at a bodega, the goal is accessibility and quick circulation. As of publishing time, the smaller bouquets have <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/artw__rld\/status\/1625552835525107714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already sold out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining 15 bouquets, meanwhile, are bigger\u2014they contain one of every type of flower extracted by Magid\u2019s team\u2014and come with a price tag that is intentionally closer to that of a \u201ctraditional\u201d gallery artwork: $10,000. (Paris\u2019s Pompidou Center has <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centrepompidou.fr\/en\/magazine\/article\/le-centre-pompidou-passe-a-lheure-nft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already acquired one<\/a> of the bigger bouquets, and Magid hopes other museums will too.)<\/p>\n<p>For a project built on top of layer upon layer of thinking about exploitation, aesthetics, and the circulation of value in and between digital and IRL worlds, the market status of Magid\u2019s blockchain bouquets is fairly conventional\u2014status quo even<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for Thompson, that act of recapitulation is a feature, not a flaw.
