It was auctioned off as part of\u00a0Christie\u2019s\u00a021st Century Evening Sale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it\u2019s valuable: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/assets\/0xa4c38796c35dca618fe22a4e77f4210d0b0350d6\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HUMAN ONE<\/a> is an NFT like no other. As the first-ever physical piece from the acclaimed artist, both the NFT and the electronic sculpture went up to auction as a single lot. Considering the massive sale of Beeple\u2019s Everydays (also on this list), many were unsure what this new, constantly-evolving digital masterpiece would fetch at auction. Yet, as Christie\u2019s has continued to help legitimize NFTs as true works of art, it\u2019s no wonder that Beeple\u2019s HUMAN ONE would be second only to Beeple himself in 2021.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"assange-pak-clock\">2. It was curated as part of Pak and Assange\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/censored.art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Censored<\/a>\u00a0collection, which also featured a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/censored.art\/message\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dynamic open edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/><strong>Why it\u2019s valuable: <\/strong>Pak has remained anonymous throughout their entire career, while simultaneously becoming one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/news\/pak-merge-nifty-gateway-record-breaking-art-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest-grossing living artists<\/a>. Before Christie\u2019s decided to take a chance on NFTs via its <a href=\"https:\/\/onlineonly.christies.com\/s\/beeple-first-5000-days\/beeple-b-1981-1\/112924\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Auction<\/a>, the act of minting, collecting, and trading NFTs was seen as niche at best. But after Beeple secured the biggest bag in all of NFTs, it was clear \u2014 even to <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mrNOYudaMAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saturday Night Live<\/a> <meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/>\u2014 that the time of NFTs had arrived.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"honorable-mentions\">Honorable mentions for the most expensive NFT sales<\/h3>\n<p><strong>UkraineDAO PartyBid: $6.7 million (2258 ETH)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In February 2022,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pussyrrriot\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pussy Riot\u2019s Nadya Tolokonnikova<\/a>,\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TrippyLabs\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trippy Labs<\/a>, and members from the influential <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PleasrDAO\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PleasrDAO<\/a> came together to form\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ukraine_DAO\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UkraineDAO<\/a>\u00a0with the goal of raising funds for those affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After days of collecting donations, Tolokonnikova initiated a PartyBid \u2014 which is essentially a way to crowdfund capital to purchase an NFT on auction \u2014 to purchase a\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/news\/ukrainedao-raises-7m\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1\/1 NFT of the Ukrainian flag<\/a>. A total of 3,271 bidders raised around 2,258 ETH (just under $6.7 million). The timeliness of the auction and the unique mechanics of PartyBid undoubtedly helped the Ukraine flag NFT to sell high, and set a precedent for similar mechanisms to potentially incentivize even bigger sales. Although the NFT outsold number 20 on this list, it is included here as an honorable mention because\u00a0of\u00a0the unique situation surrounding the sale, as well as\u00a0the fact that the purchase was crowdfunded.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, while these pieces didn\u2019t make our list of the biggest NFT sales, they still sold at impressive prices. <\/p>\n<p><strong>$4,000,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mad Dog Jones\u2019 piece, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillips.com\/mdj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REPLICATOR<\/a> sold for $4.1 million in April 2021. According to the artist: \u201c<em>REPLICATOR<\/em>\u00a0is the story of a machine through time. It is a reflection on forms of past groundbreaking innovation and serves as a metaphor for modern technology\u2019s continuum. I\u2019m interested to see how collectors will respond as the work evolves and the NFTs in their possession continue to create new generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>$3,000,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This list wouldn\u2019t be complete without some Bored Apes. <a href=\"https:\/\/metaverse.sothebys.com\/natively-digital\/lots\/bored-ape-8817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ape #8817<\/a> raked in $3.4 <meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/>million at a Sotheby\u2019s Metaverse auction in October 2021. The Ape sports a wool turtleneck, rainbow spinner hat, and silver hoop earrings. <\/p>\n<p><strong>$2,000,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/assets\/0xbc4ca0eda7647a8ab7c2061c2e118a18a936f13d\/3749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bored Ape #3739<\/a> sold for $2.9 million in September 2021. The Ape is a six-trait gold fur ape with a sea captain\u2019s hat, a black t-shirt, and laser eyes. Based on these traits, Bored Ape #3749 is the 27th rarest ape, according to Rarity Tools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/en\/buy\/auction\/2021\/contemporary-art-day-auction-4\/nice-to-meet-you-im-mr-misunderstood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FEWOCiOUS\u2019 piece<\/a>, Nice to meet you, I\u2019m Mr. MiSUNDERSTOOD, sold for $2.8 <meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/>million in 2021. The digital piece was in MP4 format. However, the winning bidder also received a lifesize physical sculpture of the same title.<\/p>\n<p>The third most expensive NFT sale <a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/assets\/0xbc4ca0eda7647a8ab7c2061c2e118a18a936f13d\/8585\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BAYC sale is #8585<\/a>, a trippy rainbow ape that sold for nearly $2.7 million on Opeasea.
