County Museum of Art. After establishing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/lacma-acquisition-fund-paris-hilton-2127802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital art acquisition fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year and recently acquiring a cache of NFTs from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/market\/cozomo-de-medici-nft-donation-lacma-2255017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collector Cozomo de\u2019 Medici<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the museum has now unleashed a new project to further its engagement with the blockchain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Created in partnership with blockchain consultancy Cactoid Labs, the initiative, called <a href=\"https:\/\/lacma.cactoidlabs.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remembrance of Things Future,<\/a> invites leading digital artists to create work that reinterprets objects and artworks in the museum\u2019s permanent collection. These new works will be <a href=\"https:\/\/lacma.cactoidlabs.io\/mint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minted<\/a> and released for sale on the blockchain in phases beginning March 8, each in a limited edition of 100.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemembrance of Things Future continues a tradition of inviting contemporary artists to make editions and multiples that support the museum,\u201d Erin Wright, LACMA\u2019s director of artist initiatives, told Artnet News. \u201cAs an encyclopedic museum with nearly 149,000 objects in our collection, it is always exciting to invite artists to mine the histories, cultures, and geographies of our vast holdings and see what they are drawn to use in their own work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative\u2019s first cohort features artists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MonicaRizzolli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monica Rizzolli<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ix.shells\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ix Shells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenstark.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jen Stark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/xie-emily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emily Xie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahzucker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Zucker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who<\/span> have deployed a range of technologies\u2014from generative algorithms to video synthesizers\u2014to create their pieces.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2267632\" style=\"width: 711px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2267632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monica Rizzolli, <em>A Tour of Hypothetical Waterfalls<\/em> (2023). Photo: \u00a9 Monica Rizzolli.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rizzolli, best known for her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/collection\/fragments-of-an-infinite-field-by-monica-rizzolli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fragments of an Infinite Field<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collection on Art Blocks, opted to respond to Hokusai\u2019s 1833\u201334 series \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lacma.org\/node\/211052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Tour of Japanese Waterfalls<\/a>.\u201d Using creative JavaScript coding, she has abstracted the elements in the ukiyo-e artist\u2019s paintings, transforming his expressive landscapes into an eerie idyll she\u2019s titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Tour of Hypothetical Waterfalls<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe use of geometric and floral patterns in these 17th-century woodcuts present exciting possibilities for generative art,\u201d said Rizzolli, adding that her final piece represents just \u201cone of the outcomes that my code is capable of generating. Photo: \u00a9 ItzelYard<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Rizzolli, Ix Shells (or Itzel Yard) picked a nature-based image to work off, namely, <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lacma.org\/node\/212293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 1851 albumen and salt print of a leafy branch<\/a>. Photo: \u00a9 Emily Xie.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two artists, Jen Stark and Emily Xie, have found inspiration in <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lacma.org\/node\/252324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lacma.org\/node\/173302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quilts<\/a> in LACMA\u2019s costume and textile holdings, and created ravishingly geometric works in response. Photo: \u00a9 Sarah Zucker.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A percentage of proceeds from Remembrance of Things Future will support LACMA\u2019s Art + Technology Lab, which offers grants to artists experimenting with new technologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeginning with the advent of our Art + Technology Lab in the 1960s, LACMA has been eager to explore new technologies with artists,\u201d said Wright. \u201cThe blockchain initiative is a natural extension of that interest and we have found committed partners, supporters, and collaborators to help build our knowledge and understanding of what\u2019s possible in this realm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upcoming releases from Remembrance of Things Future, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CactoidLabs\/status\/1631078871251681280?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as teased by Cactoid Labs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, will include works by the starry likes of Tyler Hobbs, 0xDEAFBEEF, and William Mapan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mark the launch of the initiative, LACMA\u2019s Stark Bar will be displayed with existing works by Rizzolli, Shells, Stark, Xie, and Zucker, in a show curated by Cactoid Labs.
