The show, entitled <em>Natively Digital: Glitch-ism<\/em>, featured 17 artists from the glitch art world, an aesthetic known for its distorted visuals, flashing lights, and erratic compositions. <\/p>\n<p>However, the show quickly courted controversy, coming under fire for not featuring a single woman artist in the auction\u2019s roster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSotheby\u2019s is pausing Natively Digital: Glitch-ism to redress the imbalance in representation within the sale, and will relaunch with a more equitable and diverse group of artists at a later date,\u201d the company <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sothebysverse\/status\/1640119893612789768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote in a March 26 tweet<\/a> addressing the controversy. The move was generally well-received by the Web3 community, who applauded Sotheby\u2019s willingness to course-correct. <\/p>\n<p>Still, the company\u2019s original oversight was anything but surprising.<\/p>\n<p>Web3 can, at times, appear demographically lopsided when it comes to gender. Where are the <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/women-and-women-led-projects-driving-web3-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">women in Web3<\/a>? The question seems both absurd and rational. Women have been an integral part of the space since its beginning; however, the stereotype of their absence persists, even in the eyes of some of the NFT community\u2019s biggest names.<\/p>\n<h2>A persistent illusion<\/h2>\n<p>To one degree or another, the Web3 space is constantly haunted by the idea that the crypto bro \u2014a finance frat boy-turned-digital-token-loving caricature \u2014 dominates blockchain-based projects, initiatives, and organizations.\u00a0It can\u2019t be ignored that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1337097\/crypto-ownership-usa-age-gender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to some estimates<\/a>, men in the U.S. are far more likely to own crypto and partake in its ecosystems than women. <\/p>\n<p>But implying that women don\u2019t exist in the space is worse than a fantasy \u2014 it is a harmful lie. <\/p>\n<p>Sadly, nobody is immune to the hallucination. NFTNick \u2014 co-host of the <em>NFT Morning Show<\/em> and a well-known figure in the space with over 140,000 followers on Twitter \u2014 found himself in hot water in February 2023 when <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allnick\/status\/1625587516970524686\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he took to Twitter to list<\/a> the most influential founders in Web3. None of them women. <\/p>\n<p>Betty, the Founder and CEO of Deadfellaz, pointed this out. Nick defended the list, saying that men occupy all of the most relevant positions in the space. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The list wasn&#8217;t selected based on race or gender. It was selected based on current relevance \ud83e\udd37\u200d\u2642\ufe0f<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NFTNick.eth (@allnick) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/allnick\/status\/1625587516970524686?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 14, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Even Beeple, one of the NFT community\u2019s marquee names, is susceptible to the mirage.\u00a0After the opening of Beeple Studios in March 2023, Web3 commentators noticed just how male-heavy its inaugural celebration had been. <\/p>\n<p>Beeple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/opinion\/kenny-schachter-pays-a-mind-bending-visit-to-beeples-new-art-compound-getting-in-plenty-of-trouble-along-the-way-2270413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">response to <em>Artnet<\/em>\u2018s<\/a> Kenny Schacter on the matter was less than ideal: \u201cI mean it is what it is, the space is all frigg\u2019n dudes. This was only our first event and as with any art or crypto event, the diversity could always be better.\u201d The fact that Beeple, someone who is so intimately familiar with the NFT space, thinks that women are absent in Web3 indicates the extent to which the fog of this demographic misconception hovers above the landscape. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, that\u2019s not to say that Beeple is a \u201cbad\u201d person (a lazy label in any situation). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swopes.info\/blog\/beeples-diversity-and-inclusivity-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Even those critical<\/a> of him admit that he seems like a friendly individual who wants artists across the board to succeed.\u00a0But that doesn\u2019t relieve him of the responsibility of having a basic level of awareness of women\u2019s contributions to \u2014 and place in \u2014 Web3. <\/p>\n<p>With the Glitch-ism controversy, Sotheby\u2019s finds itself in a similar position. Nick, Beeple, and the auction house can (and hopefully will) do a better job fostering inclusive opportunities for the crypto art community \u2014 especially with so many members of the Web3 holding them accountable.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-pushing-for-change-within\">Pushing for change within<\/h2>\n<p>A day after Sotheby\u2019s launched Glitch-ism, performance artist Oona <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patrickamadon\/status\/1639674783628664833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">took to Twitter<\/a> to call attention to the lopsided nature of the show. Responding to her tweet was Patrick Amadon, one of the artists Sotheby\u2019s had included in the auction. Amadon agreed with Oona\u2019s observation, suggesting several women glitch artists Sotheby\u2019s might have included.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few hours later, Amadon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patrickamadon\/status\/1639710630927306752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">withdrew his artwork<\/a> from Sotheby\u2019s auction in a show of solidarity with the women of Web3. The move undoubtedly emphasized the gravity of the situation and likely influenced Sotheby\u2019s decision to relaunch the auction at a later date in a manner more reflective of, well, reality. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to nft now about the controversy, Amadon emphasized that overlooking women\u2019s roles in creating the glitch art community is one of the main reasons he decided to step back from the auction. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen and non-binary individuals have played a major role in the digital glitch art movement,\u201d Amadon said. \u201cTheir lack of inclusion in what was to be a historic first \u2018glitch\u2019 only sale at a major\u00a0institution was an issue. It didn\u2019t feel right for me to continue [while] knowing this, so I just did what I felt was right and pulled out of the sale. I didn\u2019t expect my action to trigger the events that unfolded or the media attention. It was nice to help give the community a spotlight and garner some positive press for the digital art space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the individuals that Amadon suggested be part of the auction was <a href=\"https:\/\/nftnow.com\/features\/next-up-five-ones-to-watch-in-march-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Empress Trash<\/a> (Drea Jay), a well-known glitch artist with a significant following in the Web3 sphere. Addressing the Sotheby\u2019s glitch art show in a correspondence with nft now, Jay expressed her appreciation to the community for calling for her inclusion in the show and spoke to the larger dynamic of women\u2019s representation in Web3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful to everyone who has been involved to amplify our voices and concerns,\u201d Jay explained. \u201cInequity in the market as a whole based on identity and socio-economic status is something I\u2019ve focused on since I got in the space. While over the course of my time here I have seen improvements, sadly I [still] see and experience women, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC undervalued as a whole across genres to their male [and] anonymous contemporaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jay also noted that, while some artists choose to maintain an anonymous identity, that approach would deny her the ability to truly be herself in her creative practice, stripping away the very identity through which she exists as an artist. Choosing to be anonymous as a woman in Web3, she believes, recognizes the issue but simultaneously dismisses rather than addresses it. As someone who increasingly gains fame and recognition for her work, Jay points to the fact that these mean little without financial growth to match.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a lack of quality or historical relevance of my work [that explains] why it\u2019s not valued for more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Empress Trash (Drea Jay)<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a lack of quality or historical relevance of my work [that explains] why it\u2019s not valued for more,\u201d Jay elaborated. \u201cThere are bigger market and social dynamics at play [\u2026] a portion of that is devaluing women, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC overall. This is all why I contributed my voice and helped amplify others with the Sothebys protest, not because I wasn\u2019t specifically included.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A way forward for gender equity in Web3?<\/h2>\n<p>Amadon believes Sotheby\u2019s wasn\u2019t acting maliciously and instead attributes the oversight to a cultural blindspot the auction house simply needs to pay more attention to. That\u2019s an important distinction, one that makes all the difference in how Web3 chooses to approach solutions regarding gender representation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe Sotheby\u2019s just made a genuine mistake, and I hope that the attention drawn to this issue will just result in a better dialogue and perhaps more focus on marginalized groups being more fairly represented for their contributions to the space,\u201d Amadon continued. \u201cSotheby\u2019s has since paused the sale and will relaunch it with a revised, more inclusive roster. To their credit, they listened, have pivoted, and are taking steps to do right by those communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incumbent on the entire community to make sure the narratives we share reflect reality and value each others\u2019 contributions fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Patrick Amadon<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The compassionate note Amadon strikes is a crucial one. Attaining the right balance between holding people and organizations accountable for such lapses in judgment and collectively working on solutions with enthusiasm will have a huge effect on what the outcomes of the problems look like. Every actor in Web3 (this publication included) has a genuinely exciting chance to help ensure that the tired misconceptions of a male-dominated crypto art space don\u2019t wash over the far more interesting and diverse reality. <\/p>\n<p>But capitalizing on that chance could require a shift in how Web3 enthusiasts, from platforms to collectors, think of value. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen and non-binary individuals have their contributions marginalized and their prices suffer for it,\u201d Amadon underlined of the problem. \u201cAnd because their prices suffer, they receive less attention, and the cycle continues. I believe\u00a0it\u2019s incumbent on the entire community to make sure the narratives we share reflect reality and value each others\u2019 contributions fairly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds that price becomes a signaling factor, but that it\u2019s not an honest assessment of quality or importance. \u201cMore often, price perpetuates the cycle of enriching those artists and collectors who have the most privilege and opportunity in the system. I think platforms need to do a better job of identifying this and taking more responsibility to ensure more equitable representation and opportunity.
