Strauss and Peyfuss came up with their first super high-level concept in May, 2021, while working at an aerospace engineering company. After tossing around some ideas, they settled on the 24 Series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The concept: \u201cTaking Ben\u2019s landscape photography and having it evolve throughout the day,\u201d Peyfuss explained. \u201cIt lives with you throughout the day, night, sunrise, sunset.\u201d Instead of a fixed landscape print for your wall, the artwork changes over time by tracking your day-to-night 24-hour cycle<\/span><\/p>\n Here\u2019s where the coder as the artist comes in: \u201cIt\u2019s based on user location. You\u2019re polling the city that the viewers are viewing the piece in, by looking at the IP,\u201d Strauss said. \u201cAnd from that you can calculate sunset, sunrise times, lunar phases, et cetera\u2026\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Users can mess with the VPN of a location to manipulate the artwork \u2013 such as having the VPN set to Tokyo while in NYC \u2013 and seeing the piece based on that time zone.<\/span><\/p>\n The 24 Series separates the artwork from a standard digital art .jpeg or .mp4 video, which the team refers to as \u2018\u201cpassive metadata,\u201d\u2019 i.e. metadata that doesn\u2019t do anything but be itself regardless of external input or external forces.<\/span><\/p>\n The 24 Series was also the genesis for the idea of new experiences with art based in coding.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe whole concept is an artwork that lives with you, so it\u2019s actually now a window, instead of just an art piece,\u201d says Strauss. \u201cThe idea was taking a step back in photography.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
